Project EPIC. Jefferson County Public Schools, Louisville, Kentucky.
Kaplan, Carol B.; Preli, Barbara
This description of career education activities in Jefferson County (Louisville, Kentucky) was prepared as part of a study conducted to identify evaluated, exemplary career education activities which represent the best of the current career education programs and practices referred to in Public Law 93-380. (See CE 018 212 for the final report of this study.) This document describes one of ten projects selected from 250. It presents one locale's way of successfully implementing a career education activity, the results of which are educationally significant. Each of the ten projects reported on is described in terms of project overview, program development, materials and activities, parent and community involvement, staffing and management, costs, evidence of effectiveness, and conclusions. The ultimate goal of this--the Educational Preparation for Involvement in Careers (EPIC)--project was to provide cumulative experiences across grades K-12 that are designed especially to increase low-income students' self-awareness and basic academic skills. (Special emphasis was placed on aiding students to become aware of a variety of careers and on teaching decision-making skills.) The primary subjects are identified as approximately 5,300 students enrolled in grades K-12, and the evaluation design is described as a pre-and post-test design using treatment students whose scores were compared with a national average or with predicted posttest scores.
