Part of a series devoted to identifying and evaluating strategies which vocational education administrators and instructors can use at the secondary student, teacher, or administrator level to eliminate sex stereotyping and sex bias in vocational education programs, this simulation activity involves students in real-life situations requiring family and job decisions and demonstrates how these decisions are related to sex stereotyping and sex bias in society at large. In the simulation activity, each student is assigned a role as either a family member who is looking for a job or as an employer who is seeking to fill a job opening. From this role playing, students will gain skills in decision-making, interviewing techniques, filling out job application forms, comparing income needs and salary possibilities, and participating in group interactions. A teacher's manual is provided which includes introductory and orientation materials as well as lesson plans for five classroom sessions. Each lesson plan outlines the session's goals, time requirements, materials distribution, activities, teaching methods, and a summary of the lesson. The student's materials which are to be used in the simulation activity under the teacher's direction include descriptions of a town and its families and employers, sample help wanted ads, job descriptions, interview guidelines, and application blanks.
