The 40-item test measures fifth and sixth graders' ability to use inquiry skills in social studies. The test is unique in that it requires minimal prior knowledge of social studies and allows students to apply processes associated with higher cognitive thought. It can be used with any social studies program. The test has a multiple-choice format and can be completed by students in a 40 to 50 minute period. The developer has attempted to minimize sex bias by eliminating references to sex whenever possible. Male and female roles are evenly distributed when reference to sex is required. Skill areas covered by the test items include location, research, content reading, and distinguishing opinion from fact. The administrator's guide reviews development of the test in terms of reliability, content validity, difficulty, readability, and sexism.
