As part of a continuing study of student flow in the Hawaii community colleges, this report analyzes the persistence patterns of 1975 entering students after six semesters for the community college total and the seven campuses. The persistence patterns of the 8,979 students showed that 21% enrolled for only one semester at their campus of entry (non-persisters), 39% enrolled for two or more continuous semesters (moderate persisters), 11% enrolled for two or more non-continuous semesters (stop-outs), 13% enrolled for all six semesters (extreme persisters), and 16% graduated by the end of the sixth semester. Significant differences in persistence patterns were found on all ten characteristics studied: sex, age, marital status, high school background, entry status, full- or part-time status, educational objectives, program of study, cumulative grade point average (GPA), and cumulative credit-completion ratio. Non-persisters tended to be unclassified students with GPAs below 2.0 and credit-completion ratios below 0.5. Moderate persisters tended to be widowed or divorced with credit-completion ratios of .50-.79. Stop-outs tended to change campuses. Extreme persisters tended to change both campuses and majors. Graduates tended to be health services majors with credit-completion ratios of .80-.99, seeking certificates of achievement. (BB)
