This systematic lexical comparison of 1,050 words from five Nigerian Igbo dialects is based on the list used for the West African Language Survey in 1960. The comparative phonologies are not to be regarded as definitive but as hypotheses derived from the present material. In Igbo, as in other Kwa languages, there are in general no consonant clusters, though there are many compound clusters. These dialects have in common a considerable vocabulary, systematic sound shifts, and stability of tone. Notes on the phonologies and lists are given for each dialect, Awo-Idemiri, Owerri, Ohuhu, Umuoji, and Ukwaali. Next is a phonological description of each language, divided into voiceless and voiced plosives, fricatives, rolled, nasals, laterals, semi-vowels, and vowels. A list of additions and corrections are given for each dialect list. The body of the wordlist gives the English words and then the equivalent words in the five dialects. (NCR)
