A Statewide Survey of Adult Learners: Program Awareness, Nonenrolled Participants and Intention to Enroll. Office of Research Technical Report No. 2.
Brown, Laurence A., Jr.; Sell, G. Roger
In order to determine why course enrollments in the SUN (State University of Nebraska) program, which is the University of Mid-America's course delivery system in Nebraska, were markedly lower than expected over a two-year period, a telephone survey with a stratified sample of approximately 1,200 adults was conducted. The survey questions provided data on awareness of the SUN program, level of nonenrolled participation in SUN courses, and intentions of interested adults to enroll in SUN courses. General findings, findings related to specific adult characteristics, and conclusions and implications were reported. A few of the specific findings which relate to adult characteristics were the following: familiarity with SUN, watching SUN course TV programs and/or reading SUN course newspaper articles (nonenrolled learners), and positive intentions to enroll in SUN courses (which intentions were most frequently reported by those twenty-five to forty-four years old, those earning over $15,000, and those with more than a high school education). It was suggested that lack of program awareness, real or perceived enrollment barriers, limited number of courses, tuition and materials costs, etc., could be causing the discrepancy between expected and actual program enrollment.
