Arizona Traffic Safety Education, K-8. Grade 8.
Mesa Public Schools, AZ.
One in a series designed to assist Arizona elementary and junior high school teachers in developing children's traffic safety skills, this curriculum guide for grade 8 deals with risk acceptance and the use of the decision-making process in risk situations. (Based on the introduction to highway safety rules and laws that students have mastered in grades K through 3, the program for grades 4 through 8 emphasizes decision making, using good judgment, taking the safest actions, and the importance of obeying rules and laws.) Introductory information provided for the teacher includes instructions in using this program and an explanation of student evaluation methods. In the basic traffic safety lesson, risk acceptance is defined and related to traffic safety concepts. In the other three lessons, risk acceptance is examined in relationship to bicyclists, pedestrians, and motor vehicle passengers. Information sheets within the lessons list safety concepts, rules, laws, traffic signs or symbols, and risk situations. Each lesson contains a complete plan, incorporating objectives, key points, a list of needed materials, suggested activities, student assessment procedures, and additional resource materials. Instructions are also included for special activities such as a bicycle rodeo, a bicycle skill test, and having students construct a tot safety town or organize a special vehicle day to teach traffic safety to kindergarten and grade 1 classes.
