A Guide for the Evaluation of Instructional Materials Under Chapter 622.
Massachusetts State Dept. of Education, Boston.
Since materials used in the classroom play a vital role in the educational process, it is essential that educators develop an awareness of sex and racial stereotyping in instructional materials. Massachusetts regulations adopted in 1975 require that schools present all cultures, nationalities, sexes, and races in fair perspective. This booklet has been designed to aid administrators and teachers in identifying stereotyping in materials presently in use, and to evaluate new materials prior to purchase. Check lists are presented to aid in evaluating stereotyped portrayals in fiction, readers, mathematics and science texts, social studies materials, and school library collections. An annotated list of bibliographies on teaching materials, children's books, audiovisual materials, reference works, and information sources contains about 50 entries. (Author/CTM)
