The Hmong Language: Sentences, Phrases and Words. General Information Series, No. 15. Indochinese Refugee Education Guides.
Center for Applied Linguistics, Arlington, VA.
This guide is intended to familiarize Americans with the basic structure of Hmong sentences and with words or phrases that may be useful with Hmong refugees. Hmong is represented in the Romanized Popular Alphabet. Following a general discussion of pronunciation and tone in Hmong, the structure of basic, compound, and complex sentences is discussed. Section three presents expressions commonly found in Hmong relating to proper names, titles, kinship terms, pronouns, numbers, units of measurement, time, and other conversational expressions. Three Hmong dictionaries available in the United States are listed and described. Finally, a list is provided of nine leading figures in Hmong political life over the past twenty years, with a brief explanation of their place in Hmong history. (AM)
