Children Move to Learn: A Guide to Planning Gross Motor Activities.
Kline, Judy
This guide for persons working with young children with gross motor delays is designed to be used in the assessment of gross motor abilities, the detection and identification of delays and the planning and implementation of appropriate Individual Activity Plans (IAP) for correcting the delays. Observation guidelines in the form of questions (Can the child take an object and hold it?) and appropriate activity suggestions are provided for each of five areas of motor abilities: head control, reaching and grasping, trunk control and sitting, early mobility, and pre-walking and walking. Three sample forms for recording observations are included, along with information on how to develop an Individual Activity Plan. Form A, designed for assessment of motor ability through general observation of behavior, consists of questions pertaining to vision, hearing, muscle tone and alertness. Form B can be used to record the child's progress in each of the five major areas of motor ability. Form C can be used for recording progress in the IAP. An explanation of terms, a list of suggested equipment and materials, and information on monthly developmental milestones of infants up to 15 months is also included. (CM)
