Intended as a basic text for graduate courses in art therapy with handicapped children, the book contains discussions of the role of art in the handicapped child's education and the development of cognitive and creative skills through the use of art. In the first of two parts, the range of opportunities in art for cognition, adjustment, and assessment are discussed and illustrated with over 150 drawings by children with learning disabilities, language and hearing impairments, visual-motor disorders, emotional disturbance, or by adult stroke patients. The second section presents techniques for developing, nonverbally, language concepts and includes methods for remediating cognitive deficits and evaluating cognitive and creative skills. The procedures are illustrated with case studies and supported with statistical analysis of four investigations. The appendix includes responses by craftsmen, employers, and others to a questionnaire regarding employment opportunities for the deaf. (Author/DB)
