Model Program for Surveying Employers of Automotive Technology Graduates.
Woodnutt, Tom
Using a sample of all graduates and a randomly chosen group of leavers (those who had completed three terms over a four-year period), a study was conducted at Chemeketa Community College to develop a model survey instrument for employers to evaluate the automotive technology program. Several steps were followed in the development process, including the creation of a flow chart of the study activities, a literature review, and the identification and location of previous students and their employers. (Since tracking former students and employers is the most time consuming and expensive of these steps, a college wishing to conduct such a survey needs to have an easy-to-use and accurate data system.) A two-page survey form was produced, of which the first page covers general topics and is applicable to any college program while the second page focuses on specific curriculum questions. Because of its design, it can be used by any community college occupational program (1) to acquire meaningful information from employers which can be applied to program review and planning, (2) to involve a technology advisory committee in the follow-up process, and (3) to satisfy both the instructional needs of the college program and the guidelines of the state and federal governments. (Copies of the flow chart and the questionnaire are included.) (ELG)
