Report on Women in America. Department of State Publication 8923.
National Commission for UNESCO (Dept. of State), Washington, DC.
This report provides an analysis of the role and status of women in the United States. A review of feminism includes a discussion of sex discrimination, the legal background of the movement for liberation and equal rights, early moves for protection and equality, and the current status of the womens' movement. The role of legislation and of the Federal government in initiating changes in the legal and economic status of women is outlined. The role of women in education is discussed in relation to decentralization of school systems, the trend to demand more education, equalization of educational opportunities, special programs for minorities and other disadvantaged groups, and Federal government intervention in problems of sex discrimination in the schools. A profile of the working woman is given in a discussion of women in the work force. Other topics that are addressed include employment trends, opportunities and options for women, the status of women in different professions, differing unemployment rates, patterns of job discrimination, and ways that employment discrimination has been fought. Future perspectives for improving women's social and economic status are considered. (Author/AM)
