A variety of direct and indirect instructional activities during the last ten years have employed computers. Within Computer Assisted Instruction (CAI) programs, the following broad classes of instructional strategies have been generally accepted: tutorial, drill and practice, review, testing, remediation and diagnosis, problem solving, and simulations. Given the wide range of students, subject matter, and strategies of instruction in CAI, the nature of the interface between the student and the computing system becomes paramount. The following devices can be identified as desirable components of the computer terminal interface in a CAI system: such output devices as the display medium, graphic output, audio output, image projection, and special output signals; and such input devices as keyboard, pointing response, audio, and special input signals.
