Report on Follow-up Survey of American Civil Liberties Union Research on Academic Freedom.
Renneisen, Chas. M.
A survey was undertaken in 1976 to follow an American Civil Liberties Union survey of 1970-71 on policies and practices relating to academic freedom and university governance. A questionnaire was used to determine what, if any, changes had occurred in the intervening years. Responses were received from 109 schools. Sharp increases were noted in the amount of student involvement in grade appeals, faculty selection, administrative appointments, governing boards, and faculty promotions. Moderate increases in student involvement occurred in admission policies, financial aid policies, administrative evaluations, and upgrading systems. Very little change was reported in student input to course requirements, curriculum offerings, and buildings and grounds. (Author/MSE)
