A Report on the Feasibility and Design of Alternative Approaches to Evaluating Preceptorships Exclusive of Longitudinal Tracking. Final Report-Part II.
American Medical Students Association Foundation, Rolling Meadows, IL.
The original version of this report dealt with the feasibility of a longitudinal design for studying the effects of preceptorships on medical students' career choices. The present document supplements the original report, focuses on various non-longitudinal designs, and assesses their suitability for providing the type of information required for evaluating the impact of preceptorship experiences on certain aspects of medical career paths. Each design is evaluated in terms of its ability to provide reliable information about three outcomes: speciality, geographic area, and community size choices. This report includes seven sections: (1) the various problems of control in evaluation designs, including the categories of variables which must be taken into account when preceptorship impacts on career choices are being studied; (2) retrospective, or ex post facto designs; (3) cross-sectional designs; (4) the possibilities of pooling existing data in a centralized computer file; (5) the possibilities of constructing an evaluation package for use by several preceptorship programs; (6) some general issues in choosing an evaluation design; and (7) additional questions regarding the impacts of preceptorships which might be worth studying.
