Standards for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. The Accreditation of Basic and Advanced Preparation Programs for Professional School Personnel.
National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, Washington, DC.
This draft of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) standards reflects a revision that was completed by the Council's Committee on Standards over a two-year period between 1975-1977. An outline is given of the standards to be met by schools of education desiring accreditation by NCATE. The standards, effective January 1, 1979, are presented in three sections. The first covers programs for the initial preparation of teachers through the fifth-year level, including Master of Arts for Teachers. The second deals with post-baccalaureate programs for the advanced preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel. Each of these sections describes the following areas of institutional responsibility: (1) governance of programs; (2) curricula; (3) faculty; (4) admission and retention of students; (5) required resources and facilities; and (6) evaluation of graduates, program reviews and long-range planning. The third section presents questions that may assist in clarifying the intent and meaning of the Standards. (JD)
