Some Characteristics and Opinions of L.A.C.C. Entering Students, Fall, 1977: A Report on Responses to the A.C.E. 1977 Student Information Form. Research Study #78-2.
Stine, Vance
Los Angeles City College (LACC), a predominantly minority, inner-city community college, administered the ACE "1977 Student Information Form" to 3,000 incoming students for fall 1977. The form allowed students to express opinions on current issues; the generated information was used in comparing student characteristics and attitudes with those of other students throughout the country. Of students given the form, 1,509 responded. Of these, 585 had taken college work previously, and 182 were not full-time students. Data are organized in tabular form. Table 1 summarizes the responses of 742 full-time, first-time LACC freshmen to questionnaire items on year graduated from high school, age, sex, racial background, political orientation, average grade in high school, marital status, parental income, commuting distance, important reasons for selecting LACC, veteran status, degree objectives, major study field, probable career, employment, essential or important objectives, statements about which they agree or disagree, need for remedial work, and skills. Responses of LACC freshmen for 1973-1976 and national two-year college norms for 1977 are also included. Tables 2 and 3 present part-time and transfer student responses to the same items, with 1973-1977 figures for comparison. A copy of the form is included. (TR)
