Collective Bargaining in Higher Education: Administrative Perspectives.
Walker, J. Malcolm; Lawler, John J.
Administrators' perspectives on faculty bargaining are assessed, using data from a survey of administrators in the California State University and Colleges. The following are reported: (1) administrators' attitudes toward, and perceptions of, a variety of current conditions in their organizations; (2) their expectations as to the impact of collective bargaining; and (3) their assessment of the effectiveness of bargaining in higher education. These are then related to the degree of support for faculty bargaining in the CSUC, using bivariate analysis. Factor analysis is used to reduce the set of expectations with respect to the impact of bargaining to a set of underlying dimensions. Indices of these dimensions, together with attitudinal and perceptual variables, were then used as predictors of the degree of support for bargaining. The model explains 53 percent of the variance.
