This book is a compilation of the edited versions of a representative selection of papers on school and community presented at a European conference involving more than twenty countries. The papers are arranged in three sections. The first section of six papers lays the framework for the discussion which follows. Section 2, comprised of six papers covering participation and educational decision making, concentrates on school and community relationships, particularly the involvement of community groups in the management and curricular definition of schools. The last section includes four papers on school and work which focus on ways in which the school and its offerings relate both to earning a living and to contributing to existing and future patterns of production and service. Some representative titles from each of the three sections respectively are (1) "The Challenge of School and Community and Whether or Not to Accept It", and "The Community as Educator: The Italian Case," (2) "Local, Regional and National Participation in Educational Policy Decision-Making and School Administration," and "Participants in Educational Policy Making: Some Aspects of Legitimacy," and (3) "School and Work: The Problem as It Affects Girls" and "Education and Work: Reforms in Danish Vocational Training." A list of the more than thirty papers presented at the conference concludes this book. (EM)
