Vocational Preparation for Women: A Critical Analysis.
Steiger, JoAnn
In this analysis of vocational preparation for women material is presented to substantiate the claim that women are joining the labor force in increasing numbers and their career opportunities are expanding, but that the educational system has failed to respond. Statistical data is cited showing that women have traditionally been employed in just a few low-paying jobs and that they should seek careers in traditionally male-dominated fields. The laws relating to sex equality in employment are discussed, as well as the socialization forces which push women into a highly-restricted vision of their role. Evidence is presented that schools heavily reinforce the traditional sex-role stereotypes in course offerings, curriculum materials, guidance and counseling programs, and other aspects of school life. In addition, recommendations are presented for changes in the educational system to make it more responsive to the real needs of women students. (BB)
