Instruments for the Study of Instructional Time. Beginning Teacher Evaluation Study. Technical Note Series. Technical Note II-2.
Far West Lab. for Educational Research and Development, San Francisco, CA.
Data collection procedures for the Beginning Teacher Evaluation Study are described. The instructional time phase of this study investigated the amount of time the teacher spent teaching particular objectives in reading and mathematics, and its relationship to student achievement. Two types of data were gathered from the second and fifth grade classrooms involved in the study: (1) daily logs or check lists, in which the teacher recorded the time spent on various areas of the curriculum, and (2) observations noted by a trained observer who spent ten consecutive days in the classroom. In addition to the data on curriculum content and instructional time, the researchers were also interested in the instructional setting: small group instruction vs. individual seatwork, teacher involvement in the learning activity, and pacing of the lessons. Thus, the amount of time spent in various types of learning activities was recorded for each of the curriculum content categories in reading and mathematics. These content categories are appended. The development and field testing of both data collection methods, and the instructions for recordkeeping are described in detail. (GDC)
