Ohio History Resource Guide for Frontier Ohio.
Walker, Byron H.
The resource guide is designed to help seventh grade history teachers in Ohio meet the requirements for a mandated course on state history, geography, and civics. Although history is the central discipline, the guide presents an interdisciplinary approach. It contains questions for discussion, readings from primary sources, and class activities related to aspects of life in colonial times in Ohio. The first several sections offer suggestions for introducing the unit and the study of history in general. Definitions of history, the historical method, uses of history, and procedures for teaching history are reviewed. The major part of the guide presents discussion questions and related readings grouped according to topics such as: the people who settled the Ohio frontier, clearing of land and cabin construction, food and cooking, hunting, family roles, education, religion, social life, and government. Readings are taken from personal diaries, letters, newspapers, and travel reports dating from the colonial period. A concluding bibliography identifies approximately 200 relevant teacher resources, student reference books, photograph collections, filmstrips, records, tapes, and field trip suggestions. (AV)
