Why Foreign Language Teachers Should Be Active Participants in Public Relations and Publicity Activities [Revised Version].
Jones, Gaston R.
A permanent national publicity and public relations campaign for learning foreign languages is necessary to the well-being of this country, of its youth, and for the growth and stability of the profession of language teaching. Nine major factors have contributed to the decline in language enrollment: (1) the dropping of foreign language requirements; (2) the crisis in higher education; (3) the declining population; (4) federal aid for vocational education; (5) new schedules in high schools; (6) budget cuts; (7) new attitudes of students; (8) public attitude; (9) keen competition for teaching jobs. Expertise in foreign languages is, however, valuable, not only in the educational process of the individual, but also in fields such as international relations and trade. Foreign language teachers must be actively involved in informing the public of the importance of language instruction. A handout is included with this paper which gives detailed suggestions for public relations efforts. (Author/CFM)
