This study examines the conversational behaviors of subjects with differing verbal abilities within a three-person group setting. According to a score on the Verbal Reticence Scale (Lustig, 1974), 108 subjects were rated as highly verbal, moderately verbal, or verbally reticent. From these classifications, smaller groups were selected at random to serve as "experimental subjects" from whom the data were collected, while the remaining students were group members. Throat microphones recorded each person's vocalizations separately, and the interaction of the group was collected in three other channels of the recorder. Hypotheses based on sex differences, individual differences, and group composition were analyzed according to a number of dependent variables. The data provide information about the frequency, duration, and sequencing of sound-silence behaviors in triads. The study adovcates further investigation of verbal behavior patterns in small group settings so that a comprehensive theory of communicative interaction may be developed. (MAI)
