Ability Correlates of Systematically Derived Occupational Variables: A Repeated Study. Ergometric Research and Development Series Report No. 13.
Heath, W. D., III; And Others
A study was done to determine the relationships between the revised Occupation Analysis Inventory (OAI) work-dimension scores and job ability-requirement estimates and the ability test scores of job incumbents and graduate trainees in related vocational/technical education programs. (The OAI is an instrument containing 622 work elements which are descriptions of work activities and conditions on which jobs and occupations are rated. In earlier studies, the OAI work elements were reduced to a lesser number of work-dimensions.) The worker (criterion) variable consisted of the mean General Aptitude Test Battery (GATB) scores of job incumbents in 195 occupations and the mean general vocational capability tests scores of graduate trainees in twenty-nine postsecondary occupational education programs. The occupational (predictor) criterion was derived from the OAI and consisted of work-dimension scores and ability-requirement estimates derived from OAI job ratings of all the occupations for which criterion data were obtained. Statistical analyses supported the construct validity of the OAI variables. It was concluded that the OAI work-dimension scores and job ability-requirement estimates possess demonstrated relevance to the measured abilities of job incumbents and graduate trainees. (Sample and mean scores for vocational capability data, sample for GATB data, and titles of the work dimensions are appended.) (Author/EM)
