The House That Jill and Jack Built.
Koppelman, Phyllis
This guide is designed to serve as an aid to developing a career education program using carpentry as a vehicle for expanding skills and aspirations of K-12 girls and boys. Each section is intended to be used as a resource in planning the program. The section on supplies and equipment provides recommendations as to quality, quantity, and storage of tools. The next section (exploratory phase) provides practical information on how to begin workshops designed to give students and teachers opportunity to use hand tools safely and with ease. Focus is on hammering, sawing, and drilling procedures. The carpentry lessons that follow explain how each basic hand tool can be presented to students. Since the emphasis is on introducing specific information about tools to K-3 children, the lessons are written as if the teacher were talking to the students. Lessons presented in the conceptualization phase section present skill information, e.g., how to nail two pieces of wood together. The curriculum section shows how carpentry can be expanded into the classroom to relate to the total curriculum. "People Who Use Tools" provides the unifying theme for the seven lessons in the first part of this section. The second part, "Stories to Grow By," is made up of lessons on a multiethnic selection of books used to expand students' aspirations beyond ordinary sex role and occupational role stereotypes. A list of supplementary resources and photographs for classroom use are also included. The final section briefly evaluates a project which made use of these materials and makes recommendations for developing a similar project. (TA)
