Dealing with Causes of Behavior. Intermediate Teacher's Manual, Grades 4-5.
Educational Research Council of America, Cleveland, OH.; Lakewood Public Schools, OH.; Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus.
The manual contains teaching techniques and instructional materials to help fourth and fifth graders develop an understanding of behavior, express their feelings constructively, and satisfy their emotional needs. The program is based on the theory that behavior is influenced by motivating forces, an individual's perceptions and abilities, and the immediate physical setting. Aggressive behavior can mean the assertive behavior that is approved by our culture, or it can mean the agression that harms people. It may be difficult for young children to distinguish between the two. Specific objectives of this program are to help students understand the motivations underlying behavior, realize the nature of frustrations, identify constructive ways of responding in certain situations, and realize the effects of actions upon themselves and others. The manual contains eight units with content about fears and security; self-worth; friendship and belonging; anger; and behavior towards people and property. Another unit provides activities to introduce students to the program if they have not participated in the primary level component. Each unit includes a statement of purpose, student objectives, teaching techniques, and lists of activities and materials. Also included are a discussion of general teaching approaches and a list of supplementary readings. (AV)
