Dealing with Causes of Behavior. Primary Teacher's Manual, Grades 1-3.
Educational Research Council of America, Cleveland, OH.; Lakewood Public Schools, OH.; Ohio State Dept. of Education, Columbus.
The manual contains teaching techniques and instructional materials to help children in the primary grades develop an understanding of behavior, express their feelings constructively, and satisfy their emotional needs. Materials can be used flexibly with students in grades one through three. The program is based on the theory that behavior is influenced by motivating forces, an individual's perceptions and abilities, and the immediate physical setting. The underlying rationale of the materials is that harmful aggressive behavior will be reduced if children begin exploring their feelings at an early age. Specific objectives of the program include understanding human motivations underlying behavior, developing alternative ways of responding in certain situations, and identifying the nature of aggressive behavior. Guidelines are provided for determining which behaviors are constructive. The manual contains six units which deal with feelings, needs, actions, frustration, anger, and harmful actions. Each unit includes a statement of purpose, student objectives, teaching materials, a teacher activity, and reading material and pictures for class discussion. The manual also provides detailed information for the teacher concerning teaching methods, individual student differences, need for a noncompetitive atmosphere, and group dynamics. A supplementary reading list is included. (AV)
