Geography in Education.
Graves, Norman J.
The book reviews the historical development of geography as discipline and discusses the current status of geography teaching in British schools. Chapter one briefly identifies the rationale for including geography in the educational curriculum. Chapter two traces the role of geography in academic study from ancient Greece to the present. Growth and development of geography in British schools are examined in chapter three, including comparison with geography teaching in France and North America. Chapter four explores the role of geography in the structure of knowledge, emphasizing the nature of human geography as a social science. Objectives of geography education are outlined in chapter five, followed by a discussion in chapter six of how to design curriculum which will achieve those objectives. Topics include curriculum problems, curriculum theory, and examples of successful geography curriculum projects in Britain and the United States, such as the High School Geography Project. Chapters seven and eight treat common learning problems of students, such as spatial relations, logical thinking, and conceptualization. Evaluation theories and techniques are presented in chapter nine. (AV)
