Going Camping? A Basic Guide to Camping with Students.
Beginning with the "often overlooked areas", this guide to camping trips for secondary students presents initial planning procedures such as: site selection; number of leaders per number of students (2 leaders for each group of 10-12); parental permission forms; transportation arrangements; public school announcements; medical aid expertise and medical forms; consideration of potential weather conditions; rules regarding drugs and the like; safety consciousness; and staff involvement (types of leadership). The "more obvious preparations" are also detailed as follows: equipment and equipment responsibilities (clothing and individual equipment, including sample lists for weekend trips to Cape Cod in December and New Hampshire in the early fall and February); group equipment (shelter; tarps; ground sheets; sleeping bags; sleeping pads; cooking gear; stoves; food, including some sample menus; first aid supplies; and other things such as trash bags, extra cord, and cameras). Suggestions on "when you get there" are directed toward: setting up camp; environmental concerns; the division of labor; and sleep and noise. Suggestions for terminating the trip smoothly include providing for: phone availability, equipment check in by "fresh labor", and pre-determined custodial arrangements. The appendices of this document include: the Project Adventure Equipment Policy; a list of outdoor equipment suppliers; and a sample parent permission letter. (JC)
