Teaching Through Adventure: A Practical Approach.
Presenting four basic adventure education concepts as defined by Project Adventure (a Demonstrator/Developer Project within the National Diffusion Network and operating out of Massachusetts), this book describes a number of successful high school and middle high adventure programs. Major adventure education concepts are identified as: adventure (an emotional context wherein students are given opportunity to feel and know involvement); cooperation (working in a group toward a common goal which cannot be accomplished individually); linkage between direct experiences and classroom concepts; and the perception of education as the integration of an individual's physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and aesthetic personality. The program descriptions are presented in terms of learning and teaching objectives, the experience itself, evaluation, and followup and include the following: a "mud walk" by a secondary biology class; an experiment in defining education via research and a trip to four differing schools by an eighth grade English class; a "texture walk" by a senior high's advanced art class; action seminars (half-day interdisciplinary semester courses which focus on learning through activity and which result in a tangible product--a Greek feast, for example); and a three-day trip to Cape Cod for 200 students in field biology. This document also includes some practical considerations for developing an adventure curriculum (emphasis on planning, implementation, and followup problems). (JC)
