Report on Mitchell Senior Seminar 1973-74.
Fornander, Garold A.
Describing and evaluating an experimental program in experiential education conducted during the 1973-74 school year at Mitchell High School in Colorado Springs, Colorado, this paper includes: a discussion of program planning and development; a report on the operation of the Seminar; a discussion of the evaluation process and results; and a summary of views and recommendations. The program's curriculum booklet is appended and each of the seven learning blocks is presented in terms of: overall description; structure; objectives; activities; materials and resources; films and filmstrips; and cost analysis. The learning blocks are identified as follows: Living with the Earth (American pioneer existence); Dollar Power (financial responsibilities after graduation); Outdoor Challenge (academic learning in the out-of-doors); Why Man Creates (direct involvement with creative people and in creative endeavors); Becoming Partners (assessment of needs and personalities re: marriage); Crime and Punishment (awareness of criminal justice in the U.S.); and Other America (exposure to cultures and life styles outside mainstream America). As described here, program evaluation involved student, staff, observer, and statistical assessment (Tennessee Self Concept Form, School Climate Survey, and Student Description Form administered on a pre- and post-test basis); and indicated "resounding" success, though recommendations call for minority student recruitment, block evaluation formats corresponding to the final evaluation format, improved communication with outsiders, new staff development, etc. (JC)
