Utilizing the National Longitudinal Surveys of 5,159 young women aged fourteen to twenty-four from 1968 to 1973, the study reports on the educational, labor market, and family experiences of young women. The content is in seven chapters. Chapter 1 describes the data base and presents an overview of changes in the women's life patterns over the study period. Chapter 2 examines college attendance and the factors associated with desires and expectations for higher education and the quality of the institution a woman attends. Chapter 3 studies the labor force dynamics associated with withdrawal from and reentry into the labor force when a woman bears her first child. Chapter 4 explores the characteristics of young women that are associated with the choice of an atypical occupation. Chapter 5 examines determinents of average hourly earnings of young women with focus on the impact of training and on differences in wage structures by sex. Chapter 6 analyzes causes and consequences of migration for the economic welfare of young women and their families. Chapter 7 examines some of the determinants of marital disruption and its economic consequences. (Eighty-eight tables and thirteen figures are included. The 1968 and 1973 survey forms are appended.)
