A Needs Assessment for Career Planning and Preparation in Connecticut. Final Report. A Counselor's Guide for Comprehensive Career Guidance Services.
English, Thomas W.
Focusing on systems and approaches to providing career guidance services rather than specific techniques, this guide is divided into eight chapters. Chapters 1-4 describe the state of the art of career guidance, including discussion of theory and prior research, theories of vocational development, career guidance concepts and practices, and career guidance as part of career education. Chapter 5 focuses more specifically on the information service function of career guidance. Various information dissemination methods are briefly described, including a description of eight prominent computerized guidance systems. Project VIEW (Vocational Information for Education and Work) and the Guidance Information System (GIS) are described in some detail. Chapter 6 reviews manpower forecasting techniques and procedures used by the U.S. Department of Labor to project labor market needs. Chapter 7 provides an overview of management information systems and their relevance to career planning and introduces a planning technique having relevancy to career planning at the local level. Chapter 8 looks ahead at specific approaches and techniques in career guidance. A bibliography is included and a description of the Management Information System for Vocational Education (MISVE) is appended. (TA)
