Development and Field Testing of Materials in Support of the Project "Developing Career Awareness for Spanish-Surnamed People." Final Report.
Computer-assisted instructional (CAI) lessons were incorporated as instructional support for a one-semester course in occupational information for 122 eighth graders at a selected middle school in the Dallas, Texas, Independent School District to field-test five modules (fifteen color videotapes and fifteen CAI lessons) focusing on career education concepts uniquely applicable to Mexican-American students. To evaluate the multimedia materials and to measure differences in student attitude and learning toward them, records were maintained on each question and module, as well as on pre- and posttests, attitude questionnaire, and student attendance. Conclusions reached included the following: (1) Increases in student learning, as measured by correct completion of the CAI materials, were evenly distributed among the Black, Mexican-American, and Anglo participants; as measured by the pre- and posttest, increases were greatest for Black females; all students in the treatment group averaged a higher score on the posttest than control group students; (2) motivation was higher for treatment group students than control students; (3) student attitudes toward the experience were positive; and (4) CAI was a useable instructional tool for students with below average reading levels. (Appendixes, which make up the greater part of the document, contain developmental objectives and behavioral outcomes for the five modules, data-gathering instruments, and the introductory CAI lesson developed for student orientation.)
