Selected Characteristics: Classified & Unclassified (Regular) Students. Community Colleges, Fall 1977.
Hawaii Univ., Honolulu. Community Coll. System.
An analysis of student enrollment statistics of the 7 campuses in the Hawaii community college system for fall 1977 yielded the following summary information: regular credit students comprised 77% of the total enrollment; enrollment decreased 1% over fall 1976, the first decrease since the system began in 1965; males outnumbered females by the smallest margin (8%) in five years; average student age was 24.6, with individual campus averages ranging from 22.5 to 27.0; the modal age was 18-19; and 47% were enrolled in liberal arts programs with 44% in vocational programs. From fall 1973 to fall 1976, the number of semester units carried has decreased from 11.5 to 10.5, and the percentage of full-time students has decreased from 63% to 56%, with a proportionate rise in part-time enrollment. More students continued from the spring semester (55% compared with 53% in 1976), and fewer students (10%) transferred into the system than in 1976 (12%). Hawaii high schools graduated 3% more students in 1977 than in 1976, but the proportion of these students enrolled in community colleges decreased from 26% in 1976 to 24% in 1977. In addition to this summary data, student characteristics are presented by individual campus, and frequency distributions are given for programs and majors within programs. (RT)
