A Typology of Grammatical Errors. Swedish-English Contrastive Studies, Report No. 1.
Svartvik, Jan; And Others
The Swedish-English Contrastive Studies project was begun in 1972 in the English Department of Lund University. The project began with an analysis of errors, of which this is the first report. The approach to error analysis is primarily an attempt to: (1) establish the areas of English grammar, lexis, and phonology which cause difficulty to Swedish students of English; (2) explain why these errors occur; and (3) suggest ways of improving the situation. The present report deals with the first and is restricted to grammatical errors in translations by university students of English. It is a typology of grammatical errors, based on 1,159 errors in two sets of samples selected from a total of over 8,000 translations produced during the years 1961-1972. The following aspects of language are covered: (1) the verb phrase, (2) the noun phrase, (3) pronouns, (4) numerals, (5) adjectives and adverbs, (6) prepositions, (7) concord, (8) complementation, (9) word order, and (10) clause connection.
