The Counselor's Role as Perceived by the Students and Counselors.
Leaverton, William W.
To explore and analyze the perceptions of students and counselors as to the expected counselor's role, a random sample of fifteen counselors and seventy-five students from each of three Colorado public high schools was selected and the participants were asked to complete a survey instrument which collected three types of data: general information describing counselor and student characteristics; perceptions and role activities encompassed in the counselor's duties; and responses concerning why the perceptions of students and counselors were different. The study determined that students' perceptions were different from counselors' perceptions in eight different areas. The data also revealed that one-third of the students had never been informed of the role and function of the counselor and that the students viewed the counselor as a disciplinarian while the counselor did not view his/her role as such. Other differences revealed that students perceived they were not getting much vocational counseling and counselors perceived that they were; counselors viewed the services provided the students as career planning and students viewed it as making a choice of colleges; and students indicated that the counselor should show more personal interest in the student while counselors had no suggestions to make. The survey instruments are included in the appendix. (Author/BM)
