Music: Guide to Classroom Use in Intermediate Grades.
WETA - TV, Washington, DC.
This field-tested guide is intended to help 4th, 5th, and 6th grade teachers introduce students to different musical concepts through a series of ten 30 minute television programs. Produced by WETA-TV, Washington D.C., the fast paced, humorous programs expose students to many musical styles including vocal and instrumental jazz, bluegrass and pop, gospel and gregorian chant, Eastern and Western, solo, ensemble, and orchestral. The teaching guide focuses on experiential, activity oriented learning and listening. For example, students create simple compositions, write Haiku, conduct music, listen to different versions of the same song and discuss the differences, or plan a concert. For each television program the teaching guide outlines the behavioral objectives and major concepts to be taught, provides a synopsis of the program, and suggests preparatory and follow up classroom activities. The guide also recommends additional musical selections and provides listening guides comprised of four to six multiple-choice questions to help students respond to and define what they are hearing. Reproducible worksheets containing student exercises, a discography of music of non-European origins, a description of commercially available musical instruments, and listings of recommended student and teacher readings are also included.
