Texas Linguistic Forum: Studies in K'ekchi.
Pinkerton, Sandra, Ed.
This volume of papers reports the fieldwork and linguistic analysis done on K'ekchi, a Mayan language spoken by about 500,000 people in the departments of Alta Verapaz and Peten in Guatemala as well as in the southern part of Belize. The work was done by five anthropology and linguistics graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin with a K'ekchi language consultant from Coban, Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, during 1974-75. A field report on the project is followed by six papers dealing with K'ekchi phonology, morphology, syntax, case, and kinship structure. A K'ekchi text follows, along with a translation, dealing with the agricultural season as seen by the project consultant. A K'ekchi word list is also provided. An appendix contains a historical sketch of K'ekchi within the Mayan family and an outline grammar of K'ekchi. An exhaustive bibliography of articles and books about K'ekchi and its speakers completes the volume. (Author/AM)
