The Kutchins are a group of Athapaskan Indians who live in an area between the East Fork of the Chandalar River in Alaska and the Mackenzie River in Canada. Eight main groups were classified by Osgood (1936) and McKennan (1965) added a ninth group, Chandalar Kutchin. The present study is based on material collected during the summer of 1972 in one of the settlements of Chandalar Kutchin, Arctic Village. It consists of five sections: (1) a phonological study of Kutchin as spoken in Arctic Village that summer; (2) discussion of main varieties of Kutchin and comments on the relationship between Kutchin and English; (3) a phonological description of Kutchin; (4) a description of the general historical developments; and (5) a stem list of the forms on which this study is based.
