Public Awareness of the Foreign Language Program.
Lagarde, Marie L.
This paper outlines both negative and affirmative approaches to the issue of whether the public should be aware of a foreign language program. The negative approach would consider the diminishing demand for foreign languages for basic communicative needs in the United States and the conviction on the part of the public that it only needs one language to function effectively. The latter conviction affects foreign language programs at both the secondary and college levels, and affects attempts to make the public aware of foreign language education. The study examines positive efforts to make the public aware of the benefits of foreign language education, and criticizes administrator attitudes towards such programs. That is, if administrators are truly committed to the concept that the public can benefit from a foreign language program and should therefore be aware of it, budgetary, fiscal, and curricular decisions should reflect this commitment.
