A random sample of 1,109 secondary schools in the 13 southern states was chosen for this questionnaire survey. Each school received a principal's questionnaire and a speech teacher's questionnaire. A total of 889 usable questionnaires (40%) was returned. Results from the survey indicate the extent and nature of speech courses, teacher qualifications, activities offered in extracurricular speech programs, student participation in such programs, and attitudes of secondary school principals toward speech education.
