This report discusses a survey conducted in the Vancouver (Canada) School District to further investigate points raised in a previous study on the advantages and disadvantages of dividing the secondary school year into two semesters. Data for the survey were gathered through discussions with subject-area coordinators and department heads and through questionnaires completed by samples of students, parents, and teachers. The student sample included only students who had experience with both semester and nonsemester systems; the parents of those students composed the parent sample. The teacher group was randomly selected from eight semestered schools; most of the teachers selected also had taught in nonsemestered schools. The majority of students, parents, and teachers preferred the semester system, but most coordinators and department heads preferred the nonsemester system. Besides presenting the survey findings, the report also discusses some other points raised in the previous report and presents a number of conclusions and recommendations on the desirability of semestering in Vancouver's schools.
