The history of the High School Geography Project is presented. The paper is divided into five topics. (1) "Search for Direction" traces the project from its origins in 1961 to the emergence of a curriculum development model. (2) "The Elaboration of the Curriculum Model and the Evolution of the Development Process Model" explains the relationship between the curriculum and the learner and explores the implications of geographer-educator cooperation. (3) "The Curriculum Evaluation Model" describes the five cycles of trial application and revision which led to the final adoption of the model. (4) "Accomplishment of the Project Objectives" compares accomplishments of the project during its nine-year history with the early objectives. The author relates the steering committee's decision that the original objective of creating a secondary-level geography course had been realized and even surpassed. (5) "Implications for Education" admonishes curriculum leaders to remember that curriculum dissemination and implementation are as important as research and development.
