The College Counseling Office: The Theory and Practice of Location, Decor and Records.
Margolis, Gary F.
This paper is a guide to the location, decor and record keeping of a college counseling service. It delineates the issues and concerns that will dictate the choice of each of these aspects of the counseling service. The choice of location can be determined only after considering the issues of privacy, accessibility and confidentiality. Thus, for example, the placement of guidance services in the administration building is ruled out. The student health service building is the most suitable locale if a separate facility cannot be provided, and this paper discusses the advantages and disadvantages of such a placement. The physical decor of the counselor's office is considered very important in creating a warm, supportive emotional space. Ways of achieving this effect are discussed. Careful record-keeping is potentially helpful in supporting the overall philosophy and practice of the counseling center, and the paper discusses means by which this potential can be realized. (NG)
