National Church Panel on Strip Mining and the Energy Crisis (Clinch Valley College, Wise, Virginia, March 14-16, 1974).
This report of the National Church Panel is designed to assist churches and other institutions and individuals in recognizing the current and future issues of national energy policy, as it relates to government and corporations. The report is based on public hearings on strip mining and the energy crisis held at Clinch Valley College, Wise, Virginia. Fifteen church leaders comprised the panel of examiners. The hearings were held to determine the role and responsibility of churches on the national level in response to the issues of social and economic justice and environmental damage raised by the widespread practice of strip mining for coal in this country. To accomplish its purpose, the panel sought the views of companies conducting strip mining, strip mine operators and trade association representatives, government agencies involved in coal purchases, public interest and environmental groups concerned about strip mining, and organizations and persons from Appalachia and the West affected by strip mining practices. The panel's report contains a preface on the importance of the issues, a statement of theology on the reasons churches are concerned, selected excerpts and testimony, and a summary of the panel's findings and recommendations. A partially annotated list of resource materials is included. (Author/MA)
