Examined were the functions and characteristics of 80 itinerant teachers of the visually handicapped in Pennsylvania. Teachers responded to a questionnaire which covered demographic data, functions and activities, and teacher competencies. Results indicated that the average itinerant teacher each week spent 19 1/4 hours in direct instruction, 1 1/2 hours consulting with regular teachers, 2 1/4 hours in material procurement or development, 2 hours in consultation with parents and others, 2 1/2 hours in administrative duties, and 5 1/4 hours in driving. The average teacher had a caseload of 19 children and received referrals from school nurses, classroom teachers, and principals. Competencies identified included skill in teaching remedial reading and listening skills and the assessment of visual functioning. The questionnaire is appended. (DB)
