The New School of Liberal Arts, a part of Brooklyn College, utilized team teaching techniques in order to raise reading, writing, and general skills levels of underprepared college students in the New York City area. During the year's study, students received intensive developmental help in conjunction with content courses in social institutions, literature, art, and science of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries in Western and Indian history. The team teaching approach of the social institutions class was used to develop reading, thinking, and study skills. One-to-one tutoring was provided for severely retarded students, and reading was also taught as a separate skills area. When the traditional barriers between content and skills faculty were crossed, reading improved, students assimilated more information, and study skills were transferred to other areas. By the end of the program, the majority of students were functioning on a productive, independent college level. (Author/KS)
